More Neuroplasticity!

Early mornings, Chalkdust, Textbooks, Fountain pens and Steadler pencils. The English teacher’s potent perfume and thorough beatings. When I close my eyes, this is my reminiscence of a classroom.

Over the weekends, I was either looking forward to Monday because I had a new pair of Toughees (Bata’s school shoes) I wanted to show off or dreading the Math teacher’s wrath because I did not do my homework. Some kids will never get to appreciate these experiences.

Why?

WiFi and computers. E-learning is the in thing nowadays. Kenyan schools are taking to the internet for their lessons. Children as young as ten are building simple games with computer code. When I was that age, I was crafting paper planes. The type of reach this generation has to information is simply unbelievable!

Why should you and I care about the impact of e-learning? In the 1900’s, a scholar had to go to a library to get a book. In 2024, I can google any resource in an instant. It takes less than twenty seconds to dive into this infinite ‘pool of knowledge’, the internet. Thus, this begs the question, If I can get answers on the fly, why expend the effort reading volumes of text? Good point! But that doesn’t mean we should stop learning and turn to Google for everything. View technology as a means to an end, especially in learning.

We should keep learning because learning to the mind is what the gym is to the body. When picking up something new, our brain forms new connections and neurons. The scientific phenomenon is known as Neuroplasticity. From improved cognitive function to delayed age-related brain problems such as dementia, the benefits of Neuroplasticity are notable.

At Education Design Unlimited, we are leveraging the power of the internet to make learning fun and interactive. How do we achieve this? Alongside the Client, we design modules in engaging and easy-to-digest formats. More Neuroplasticity!
